What does social-distancing aim at?

● Social-distancing which has been practised throughout the pandemic aims at minimizing person-to-person contact and thus reducing the risk of transmission.

● We’ve been practising social-distancing to prevent the increase of the Covid-19 cases in our society and to help contain the pandemic.

Have you ever been required to practice social-distancing in your country?

● Sure! We’ve been facing prolonged isolation for almost 2 months since Vietnam experienced the fourth wave of Covid-19 in the middle of April!

● Certainly! I remembered having had to work and learn from home for a long period of time as a result of an increase in Covid-19 cases last year.

Do you think your mental health is badly affected in the time of social-distancing?

● Yes! I’ve got a feeling that I got extremely irritable and worried and I tended to scold my sister for her small mistakes, which I felt really uncomfortable about!

● To be honest, I used to be frantic with worry when I was required to stay at home all day, witnessing the situation getting worse with a lot more infected cases!

Do you believe that practicing social-distancing can badly affect our well-being?

● Certainly! Even many scientists have proved that social-distancing is taking a heavy toll on people’s well-being, especially their mental health!

● While I agree that social distancing does cause people to suffer from mental problems, I believe that it’s necessary in saving people’s lives and warding off the pandemic.

Why does social-distancing badly affect people’s health?

● Social interactions are actually basic human needs. Hence, feeling insufficiently connected to others can trigger many dangerous mental illnesses.

● We often have to witness the fact that the situation is getting worse as many people fail to stick to the rules, which might cause us to suffer from panic attacks.

Can you give some visible signs for this phenomenon?

● Many people admitted that they used to get so pessimistic about their future that they had the intention to commit suicide!

● Social-distancing gives people the feeling of being imprisoned and they tend to become bad-tempered. It’s obvious that this fact can adversely affect their work capacity.

Are there particular groups who are especially vulnerable to mental problems during this time?

● Healthcare workers are on the front line of this pandemic, being put under intense pressure, so they run the greater risk of succumbing to mental issues.

● I believe that people with lower incomes are the most susceptible ones because they’ve always been scrambling to make ends meet during the crisis.

What can we do to protect ourselves against these adverse effects of social-distancing?

● You can hang out with your friends through virtual meetings on your smartphones. This can make you happier and have more belief in a bright future.

● Taking exercises also provides a range of benefits, including reducing stress and improving mental health so taking a walk outside might be useful for you!
